Operation TLC was a unique facility in
the old Pascagoula High School Gymnasium that played a vital role
in Gulf Coast rebuilding. What was a storm damaged, flooded, basketball
arena complete with score board and bleachers became a dormitory
equipped to house up to 150 volunteers.
The very first donation made by Hope Has
A Face Foundation in October 2006 was a contribution of 150 air
mattresses that the facility needed for arriving volunteers and
AmeriCorps Teams.
Americorps had at least one group of approximately
one dozen team members at the facility at all times and those
teams helped build playgrounds, deliver furniture and appliances
to disabled residents, removed storm debris and helped needy residents
repair their residences. Without this vital labor pool of generous
and giving individuals, much of the Gulf Coast rebuilding work
could not have been accomplished.
During the 100 Homes project, Operation
TLC performed a vital role as project headquarters, warehouse
and staging area for as many as 200 volunteers and AmeriCorps
member per day. For this project alone, over 55,000 volunteer
hours were coordinated and/or housed through Operation TLC.
In July 2007, the facility was returned
to the City of Pascagoula for renovation and now is back in use
as a state of the art Community Center.
