Okay, we often hear the statistics;
• With only two hours the earth reflected
back more
sunlight than what is used by the entire population in
one year.
• Most of the energy on the earth’s
surface comes from the sun.
• If we covered the Sahara Desert
with the photovoltaic cells, we could cover all the energy requirements
of the earth!
But there is one problem, current solar technology makes it cost
prohibitive for use in all but the most affluent households.
In New Orleans, Hope Has A Face Foundation’s
NOLA100 project was able to break that paradigm, helping to bring
Solar Hot Water systems to almost a dozen homeowners. In collaboration
with the Clinton Climate Initiative and Toyota Motor Sales, NOLA100
help to install Solar Systems for homes in the Katrina damaged
neighborhoods of the Ninth Ward and Hollygrove.
Under the guidance of a trained solar installer,
AmeriCorps and Louisiana Green Corps members learned, hands-on,
solar panel installation. This exposure is the first step in developing
the “Green Job” skills that we hear about so often
these days.
With the data and experience from these
installations, Hope Has A Face is planning additional projects
to bring this renewable energy form to affordable housing applications.
